Governor Sanford, your resignation is required and it should tendered immediately. Your actions of the past several days have been reckless, irresponsible, and dishonorable. It is reckless to leave your state without a clear chain of command, irresponsible to disappear without informing your Lt. Governor, staff, and key members of the state legislature as to your whereabouts and contact data, and dishonorable to not only have an extramarital affair, but to lie and try to cover it up, thus harming the citizens of your state in the process.
Mr. Sanford, what if there had been a natural disaster, a terrorist attack, and/or some kind of national or statewide emergency? You were nowhere to be found and no one in the government had a way to reach you. As a result, you would not have been on-hand to make critical decisions in order to fulfill your obligations, to which you are duty-bound. For all purposes, you were AWOL. Your state, a state in the union, would have descended into chaos.
To be clear, your affair is beside the point and is not the primary reason why you should resign. Ultimately, you will be judged by God and your family with regards to the actions you have taken. The primary reason you should resign is that you neglected your duties, shamed the office of the Governor, and lied to the people of South Carolina. Coming forward does not absolve you of your actions and the harm they inflicted.
Please tender your resignation immediately so that the People of South Carolina will have a Governor that will fulfill the duties you have neglected. If you choose not to do so, one of two things should happen; a recall or impeachment. Either way, you should no longer be allowed to be Governor. You have disgraced the State of South Carolina and yourself.
